SUP surfing

Here on the Canary Islands we had lots of beautiful waves for SUP surfing. I love to be out on my Naish quiver: Hokua LE 8´0´´, Hokua 7´3´´  and my new Carbon Kaholo Wave LE paddle and even went surfing on my Naish Javelin LE 12´6´´x 24´´ raceboard…

Now I would like to share some impressions with you:

German SUP Challenge Final Sprints in Pelzerhaken 2015

16.09.2015 21:53

Continuing my winning streak and collecting the overall title!

I had my last race for the season last Saturday in Pelzerhaken/Baltic Sea at the Naish Pro Center. It was the last tour stop of the German SUP Challenge and it was held together with the SUP Festival over there. In very challenging 25knots plus wind conditions I was able to secure my overall German SUP Challenge tour-title with another very clear start-to-finish victory in that final sprint competition! We had a 400m T-course with two buoy-turns where you could decide whether you want to go left or right (with the wind or against the wind first) so it was a tactical race as well and I was super happy how good my Naish Javelin LE 12´6´´ worked in the 14´ class…

German Technical Beachrace Chmapionships on Fehmarn/Baltic Sea

21.08.2015 13:09

Did it again: German Technical Beachrace Champion!

I collected another title on Fehmarn/Baltic Sea at the German Technical Beachrace Championship by Deutscher Wellenreit Verband using my 12´6´´LE Javelin (in the 14´division).

On the tight 5 buoy beach course including a beach run I had no problems keeping the competition behind me in a comfortable lead. :-)

As I really gained physical strength I now have a lot of confidence no matter what the conditions and situations are like.

Killerfish German SUP Challenge: German Championship Technical Beach Race Sylt/North Sea

Victory!

At this competition I didn´t want to finish anything else but 1st or share the victory… I won all three races in convincing manner with comfortable leads on this 900 meters 7 legs M-course set up into a little shore break …on my 12´6´´ Javelin LE - which performs really great at buoy turns!!! - in the 14´fleet.

My brother Maui finished 15th of 40 competitors in the men´s division.

1st place

This event also has a very good location to present SUP to the public and the media. The wave contest stretched over 3 days with 3 separate competition elimination rounds. The first two days were dominated by the typical North Sea wind created bumps with rather short rides in difficult conditions. I won on the first day using the Hokua 8´5´´GT (my brother Maui´s board),

finished second on day two on my Raptor 7´0´´x 28´´ (I was convinced that I won and felt very confident on it, but I guess the judges had to get used to the different shape of the board …).

On the 3rd day the judges could´t find agreement of who won, so we sheared 1st place for this day and the entire contest. This time I used the Hokua 8´3´´in rather mellow and easy swell waves without disturbing wind and also felt comfortable on it.

My brother Maui finished 14th of 30 competitors in the men´s division.

German SUP Flatwater Championship Berlin by Deutscher Kanu Verband 2015

1st place Long Distance and 2nd place sprints

This event drew a lot of public attention by the visitors who attended the "Tegeler Hafenfest" and the television and press media.

In the female sprint competition on Saturday I easily made it to the finals. After a rather good start another girl bumped into the stern of my board and I unfortunately lost balance for a moment so I lost my inside position at the first buoy. As the legs between the race marks were rather short it was hard to pass and it took me to the second last mark until I found a gap. Unfortunately a little bit too late, even though I was able to catch up onto the tail of the leading girl and finished 2nd (made up about 50 meters…). I was really happy, that I used my 12´6´´ Javelin  LE on this tight sprint course (in the up to 14´ fleet).

On the next day I promised to turn my frustration from the day before into good propelling power for the long distance ( 8 km).

For the first part of the course I controlled the toughest competition (Carol Scheunemann- 4th Lost Mills) and waited for my chance to get away. After the wind picked up a lot (stormy and rainy conditions),  I started my grinding upwind setting my pace to leave the girls behind and catching up on the paddlers of the mens fleet who had started 2 min ahead of us. So it turned out that I finished 2 minutes ahead of Carol Scheunemann on my 14´ x 23´´Javelin LE. What a satisfaction :-)

My 14 years old brother Maui won the first ever held German Youth Championship of the sprint event in convincing manner and made it onto the first page of the Sunday edition "Berliner Morgenpost" (250.000 readers…).

German SUP Flatwater Championships 2015

23.06.2015 21:37

U18 Champion and Long Distance Women Vice Champion

The German SUP Flatwater Championships organized by the German Surfing Association was taking place at the "Fühlinger See" near Cologne. It was a sunny weekend and I felt pretty comfortable on my Naish Javelin LE 12´6´´ and 14´.

On Saturday evening we had the 8k Long Distance Race - two rounds paddling on the lake, the canoe and rowing regatta course, ducking bridges and finishing back on the beach.

I finished 2nd in the ISA-Worlds-qualification-class 12´6´´ just 1 second behind the first woman and 3minutes ahead of the first 14´ woman.

On Sunday we had the sprints where I was able to win the U18 German Champion title with a big margin to the 2nd girl.

With some strange and tough battles going on I finished 3rd in both: the 12´6´´ and the 14´class

Congrats to my Naish Germany team mate Ole Schwarz who also became U18 Sprint Champion and 3rd Sprint 12´6´´ men!

We were a small but strong team ;-)

Battle Of The Coast Zandvoort/Netherlands 2015

02.06.2015 11:26

Well deserved event title considering the challenging conditions with up to over-head high beachbreak and stormy winds. Everybody of the more than 40 competitors had a hard time getting out onto the two lap respectively three lap (men) in-and-out beachrace course on Saturday. It also took me an aweful lot of time until I got started and pick up my own race more against the elements rather then the female competition. At least I was able to finally manage the course, having fun surfing in to the shore, and taking 3rd place.

For the downwind on Sunday the conditions were less brutal and the wind ideal for the parallel to the shore line race course… First our boards were transported 7k upwinds on the beach and then the competitors were picked up by the same truck and brought to the starting site which was big fun:

This time it was a lot easier to take off from the beach and get out through the shore break…

…after a short straight out leg the fleet turned downwind heading for the downwind mark close to the finish on the beach and the real fun started:

After 43minutes I also finished 3rd in this race and secured the 3rd position overall.

Stoked to mention that also my brother Maui and my dad (11th overall men) competed, completed the course making this a family fun weekend.

Lots of credit for the organizers and "The Spot" event location who were perfect hosts of this great SUP event. This was one of the nicest events I competed at and I´m looking forward to the next year… Mahalo and Aloha, Noelani

German SUP Challenge Fehmarn 2015

06.05.2015 21:42

Starting with an overall WIN…

After making it comfortably into the women´s sprint final on Saturday there I had a "messed up" beach start coming only in 5th position to the first mark I really had to pay for by being blocked three times on the course until I really could begin the race at my own pace…
…to overtake the preceding competitors. Unfortunately the race course was just a little bit too short for a complete wrap-up so I finished runner-up.
Of course this can happen and I learned my lesson for next time ;-)

On Sunday´s Long Distance race day I was really motivated - even more because we had a nice seabreeze with choppy conditions instead of the days before flatwater paddling. After beachstarting all together (men and women) I could even keep up with the leading group of the male fleet, enjoying the diverse course of up-and-downwinds and two long legs to the finish.
This time I had my own race with no female competitor anywhere near me and after a good match-up with some of the guys I finished 7.5 min ahead of the next girl with an overall time of 42min 23sec (about 3min after the first man).
Stoked about my first overall win of the season!

Wintertraining-Update 2015

16.03.2015 14:52

My training activities on Gran Canaria this winter were very versatile determined by the prevailing conditions:

In calm conditions and/or small waves I go out for sprinting, beachracing and buoy-training:

In windy and wavy conditions I like to match my dad on "hardcore-downwinders":

If the wind calms down a bit and the waves stay, we (my dad, my brother and myself) trudge round the wave spots with our Naish Hokua Waveboards:

On windier days I enjoy my new Naish Windsurfing quiver in Pozo Izquierdo and at our homespot:

As supplementary training swimming in all different medleys in the pool or open ocean are lots of fun:

For compesation I like to do for example Yoga and stretching:

For all German readers:

There is an INTERVIEW as a little preview on the upcoming SUP season with myself on:
